    Hello -
Capture Argo Basic Edition user here.

The new features of Atlas look interesting and useful, but it's a huge step backwards to go from unlimited universes to just four universes - this is a very disappointing change in structure.

Is it possible to have both Argo and Atlas installed simultaneously? So that when I need to pre-vis a show using >4 universes, I can export from Atlas back to Argo and use Argo?

I'm really not sure if it's worthwhile to upgrade, or just wait for next year's edition.

Yes it is possible to do what you describe. However, when you go from Atlas to Argo you will need to do the patching of the fifth universe and on.

So from what I have understood you find it worthwhile to upgrade to Quartet for 129, but not worthwhile to upgrade to Symphony for 695, which means you appreciate the benefits of Atlas. At least now the product choice lies totally on the project sizes on your side, and not on our side and which features we have chosen to put in the different products. Finally, since you mentioned waiting for next year there are no guarantees that the promotional price of 695 euros will be available. This includes a 30% discount and will be definitely there during the lifetime of Capture Atlas, but maybe not later.

I am in the same situation as Daniel. All of my shows are not big, but they are between 4 and 8 universes. Unfortunately due to the exchange rate in my country, the price to upgrade is very expensive so for now I have a new work around. I will continue to build my show in ago, importing the highly customised stages I am working with, then adding the lighting elements and then will save the show. After that, I will open the show atlas as a demo, which should give me full universes until the session expires. My plan is to keep doing this for a few months until I can pay the huge price to upgrade. Once I have upgraded to the highest extended licence, I hope to never ever have to pay such a large sum of money for an upgrade again. This upgrade alone is almost 1 3rd of the initial price I paid for my licence. :(

Just to comment on your last worry, it is important to mention that the promotional 699 euros is not simply a product upgrade that could happen from year to year. It is a combined Edition upgrade from Basic to Extended which should cost 900 euros, and a product upgrade from Argo to Atlas for another 149 euros. Therefore with the new product structure we do not foresee another scenario in the future of feeling the need to offer such a combo to our users. Maybe there will not even be such a combo to offer to begin with, and therefore our Product Upgrade cost will be maintained at the usual symbolic low prices.

    Hi Vangelis -

Thanks for the reply and the info - this is a good way of explaining it, that I didn't realize before. The upgrade path from Argo Basic --> Atlas Symphony is actually two steps for less than the price of one (i.e. upgrading to the features of Extended, as well as the improvements of Atlas).

This would be good information to include on the blog post / upgrade page, perhaps? 8)

Right now the way I (and I think a lot of others) are interpreting it is that the 'upgrade' from Argo Basic to Atlas Quartet actually reduces Capture's core functionality as a visualizer, by limiting it to 4 universes. If I can only program one truss out of my rig, I don't really care about the workflow/graphical improvements. 8)

Whereas what this actually is, from what you've explained, is a discount on upgrading to the features of Extended, with the upgrade to Atlas included for free.

That's a much better investment, and one that I certainly am now considering, now that I understand the model. And the exchange rate to US$ isn't too bad at the moment...

[As an aside, the choice of 1/2/4 universes seems a little out of date, when there are more and more fixtures out there that only fit four to a universe - I think a lot of users would find a split along the lines of 4 / 8 / 16 universes to be a more useful division....]

    Thanks!

Actually, There are a lot of smaller users out here that only use 1,2,4 universes and we are very grateful that the pricing model has changed
