Snapshot creation and rendering within presentation files OR password protected layers and materials

I have created a previz file that took many many hours to complete and includes a lot of proprietary assets. I frequently have to give the ability to other LDs to previz, which is why Capture's presentation function is so great!

Unfortunately, I have no way for another LD to render a video without them having complete access to the file by giving them a C2P. While being able to hand them a presentation file with rendering functionality would be great, I do understand that it may oppose the intention of the presentation function.

When I give an LD a presentation file, I can include watermarks by adding higher luminance materials to certain parts of the file. I can include a band's logo or other identifying graphic so that the presentation file can't be used for anything else. If they receive the C2P file, they're then able to do whatever they want.

If youre unable to add snapshot creation and rendering to the presentation files, I belive a simple fix would be to password protect layers and materials.

If a material is password locked, then rest of the attributes would just not be able to be edited.

The functionality for making layers lockable and unselectable is already there, but password protecting it could simply mean that you need a password to uncheck those boxes. The only other addition would be to remove that layer's right click menu and prevent the "delete" button from being pushed.

Let me know if this is possible!

I understand your problem. This is the reason that our studio does not give out full Capture files. Maybe you can also approach the problem from the other side. Why not make it possible to record a dmx stream into the presentation file, but you'd have to import it into the original Capture file to be able to render it. Then the rendering can alsways be done by you and then you can control exactly how the output looks and how you want to monetize it.

We have made a couple of attempts at figuring out how we could support business models involving protecting selected content of project files, but it has not gone well so far.

For the time being we are not inclined to give this another go.
